I had the incredible pleasure and opportunity to design a poster for a Metallica show during their M72 Europe Summer Stadion Tour.
My brief was to create an image that would have some polish element combined with an aesthetic of Metallica. I came up with an idea of a really dynamic scene featuring a twisted version of a winged hussar and his horse. The feeling of motion and speed were really important element; I feel like it exemplifies the fast riffing and heaviness of the band's discography.
As a long-time fan, I included some indirect references to the band's most iconic albums and songs. Most obviously, the piece shows a horseman, which is a nod to their song "Four Horsemen"; the second pretty obvious nod is that the hussar rides the lightning in a way, haha. The colors are similar to Master of Puppets' iconic album cover, and the explosion behind the rider is a reference to war and combat, which the band often tackles in its lyrics.
Besides designing the poster, I had the opportunity to attend the Pop-Up shop, meet the fans, and sign the posters that the band was selling. After that, I got to see the legendary band play. The whole experience was immaculate!
